Transforming Purley house into a stunning dream home
GJ Edgar are especially expert at refurbishing high-end quality homes, like this beautiful 8-bedroom family residence in Walburton Road in the highly sought after location of West Purley, Surrey.
With a value of £1.2M, its large communal areas and generous guest accommodation, it was the ideal purchase when the client was looking for a new home for his parents but he felt it needed total refurbishment and, having worked on similar projects before, decided to oversee the process for them.
“I was looking for a top quality builder and had noticed GJ Edgar’s boards up locally. They have a very good reputation locally so I approached them for an estimate,” explains Glen, the client. “I have worked with many builders and found they don’t always have the attention to detail that I insist on so I wanted reassurance. Although GJ Edgar was not the cheapest, my priority was quality and reliability and they came highly recommended.”
The house comprised 8 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, as well as several large communal areas, and is divided into guest and family accommodation. The project required full internal refurbishment throughout, including plumbing, electrics, new bathrooms, kitchen and study, new doors and extensive internal mouldings.
Gary Edgar liaised closely with Glen to establish a budget, although the first challenge was to ascertain exactly what Glen wanted.
“I am very fussy. I know what I like and have some very strong ideas,” says Glen. “It must have been hard for them as we had no specification and had not involved an architect ourselves, but Gary was brilliant at taking an idea and making it happen.”
During this process Gary won Glen’s trust and ultimately GJ Edgar were awarded the project.
During the project GJ Edgar worked alongside three separate architects firms. One had previously worked on the house in 2007 when it was changed from a 1930s bungalow to a more modern structure with a first floor. The second helped to change the outside of the building, which needed considerable work to transform it to Glen’s taste, and the third was a specialist in mouldings, pillars and stacks, bringing the final touches to the design.
In addition to this, GJ Edgar brought in several specialised contractors to work on various aspects of the renovation. They liaised between, and coordinated, all suppliers and Glen was impressed with the quality of the attention that they gave the project.
“They were good at pushing and squeezing in trades around each other. In fact,” Glen laughs, “the only issues on the job were when I engaged a supplier myself. It reminded me of how hard it was to do this. It went horribly wrong.
“Builders are usually very good at selling you the job then they disappear – to play golf or work on someone else’s project. Gary was there every day to check on how it was going, and when he wasn’t there his foreman Jerry was around. Because they were so closely involved they picked up issues before they became problems.”
Gary explains that as a consequence of not having a full plan at the outset, and the use of specialist materials and trades which can take 2 or 3 months to procure, the project was completed slightly later than expected, but this was not a problem for Glen.
“That’s the nature of designing as you go along,” he points out. “Unforeseen needs arise, but they made us aware at every stage so we could choose between a quicker solution or hold out for our preferred design. I have to say their communication was excellent and I am delighted with the end result.”
“The finish in the house is second to none,” he concludes. “I have never seen anything like it and I cannot fault it. They really listen and their customers’ standards become theirs. For example, at one point, early on, I was not happy with the finish on one of the doors so I pointed it out expecting them to try to convince me to accept it. Instead they immediately agreed to change it without discussion.”
So would Glen recommend GJ Edgar?
“Without a doubt, in fact I have already introduced them to two other potential clients.”
